My name is Darren K. Edwards, and I was born in Columbus, Georgia. I was raised in Alabama and attended high school at Boyd Anderson High School in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida. After that I attended the University of Florida (UF) for my undergraduate degree and received a law degree from the University of Florida. Returning to South Florida, I was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1988. Prior to establishing my practice, I was an Assistant Attorney General, Associate Counsel for the Palm Beach County School District, and a Broward County Attorney handling child support, alimony, and administrative matters. I not only bring experience and in-depth insight into the court system. I feel proud because of my high ethical and moral legal practice standards.
Clients come first at my firm. I am dedicated to seeing clients through stressful times and complex legal processes. Divorce is hard on a family, especially when disputes arise over child custody and support. A deteriorating financial situation impacts all aspects of your life and the life of a family. A Chapter 7 bankruptcy and a Chapter 13 bankruptcy filing may be the answer, particularly if you are facing the foreclosure of your home.

WHAT I'M EXPERT AT
Although every case is different, issues such as child support, custody, alimony, and equitable distribution are issues that arise in Divorce and other family law issues. Once the Court decides these issues, sometimes new problems pertaining to them develop years later. Sometimes financial issues can result from a divorce. I work efficiently and economically to address such problems.
We believe that clients benefit from having their cases resolved in an efficient and direct manner. By being efficient, we can minimize the emotional and financial costs of your divorce. We understand that you have a lot of decisions to make, and we will make sure your concerns are covered.
Most Contested Divorce cases are not resolved in a courtroom. They are usually resolved in a Mediation room. A large part of an attorney’s time representing a divorce client is spent on preparing for Mediation. Prior to Mediation, we confer with clients either over the phone or in-person (though in person is preferable) to prepare.
Spousal support is determined by one party’s need and the other party’s ability to pay. The amount of alimony depends on the length of the marriage and financial circumstances. There are different spousal support plans, including permanent, rehabilitative, temporary, and lump sum.
The two most common types of bankruptcy cases filed by individuals are Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcies. Chapter 7, often referred to as a liquidation, results in most of your property, which is not protected in accordance with Florida law, being sold by a Bankruptcy court and the money being used to pay off your creditors.
In the excitement of divorce litigation, sometimes parents forget that their children are human beings and not property. Florida Courts view the “best interest of the child” as the legal standard in determining time-sharing schedules and the elements of a parenting plan. In Florida, we call this parental time-sharing.
Although child support is determined based on a formula, it is not always a simple mathematic computation. An error in the calculation could result in you receiving or paying the incorrect amount of child support. There are a lot of variables that seem to be left out when non-lawyers attempt to calculate child support in their own cases.
